A Zeekoeivlei man, in Cape Town, initially thought to have burnt to death in his car, appears to have been shot in the head.
A family friend said Amien Latief had left his Zeekoeivlei home at about 8pm on Wednesday, telling his wife Mignon that he would only be popping out for an hour.
“But he never came home, which is very unusual of him.
“His wife went to the Grassy Park police station to report him missing when police informed her that a car was found burning in Strandfontein with a body in the passenger seat,” explained the family friend.
One of Latief’s colleagues later identified the car, which he had done some work on.
Police had initially traced the car’s previous owner who told them he had sold the vehicle to Latief some time ago.
Police spokesperson Elliot Sinyangana confirmed that a BMW had been found burning in Strandfontein during a routine patrol check yesterday, with a body in the passenger’s seat.
Police had initially opened an inquest docket into the incident, but after a post-mortem, discovered that the man had had been shot in the head.
“We then opened a murder docket,” he said.
The body was sent to the mortuary for forensic testing and blood samples were taken from various family members to correlate DNA results. By late last night, police confirmed that the body was Latief’s.
Sinyangana could not confirm the motive for the killing, saying all possibilities would be investigated.
