The battered body of 19-year-old Diep River waitress Vicky McLachlan, who disappeared on her way home from work 10 days ago, has been found in bushes near Philippi, and a man has been arrested for murder.
Police spokesman Jacques Wiese said there was a possibility that police would be looking for more people involved in the crime.
Although police were reluctant on Friday to identify the body positively as that of McLachlan, her distraught family are convinced it is hers.
McLachlan’s aunt, Adrienne Murray, told Weekend Argus: “We are certain it’s Vicky. Everything the police have found points to the fact that it is her body.

“Everyone is extremely traumatised by this unnecessary and senseless act of evil. Words cannot express how traumatised we are.
“Vicky was a lovely, outgoing person who just wanted to be loved by everyone and was very popular. She was the sunshine in our lives. She was just like any other youngster who wanted to make extra money and that’s why she worked at the Tavern ‘n Ale.”
A 25-year-old man was arrested after police received a tip-off from the Philippi community.
McLachlan went missing on April 9 after dropping a colleague in Heathfield at about 11.45pm. She had just finished her shift at the Tavern ‘n Ale pub in Main Road, Diep River, where she had been working since August.
A huge hunt, involving 140 volunteers from the police and the SA National Defence Force, was launched soon after her disappearance. Her car was found two days later in Sea Winds, near Lavender Hill, a mere five kilometres from her home in Grosvenor Road, Diep River.
Searchers combed the area several times and searched the sand dunes in a radius of about 4km from the spot where her car was found. The only thing missing from her locked car was the radio. A rear window was broken but police suspect that this happened after the car was abandoned.
Late on Thursday police cordoned off a large section of dense bush in the Philippi farmlands where the body was found with multiple head injuries.
Wiese said an autopsy would be done on Tuesday to establish the cause of death and identify the body by means of forensic analysis.
Last week McLachlan’s concerned family took out large advertisements in weekend newspapers in a bid to find out what had happened to her. They also distributed pamphlets.
Murray said McLachlan’s parents, Daphne and John, had not yet identified the body but they believed it was just a formality. “Police are still busy with their forensic work but we know that it’s Vicky and that we will identify her body.”
Asked what the family thought had happened on the fateful night of the disappearance of their eldest daughter, Murray said: “We believe she dropped off one of her colleagues and was then abducted.”
McLachlan matriculated at Bergvliet High School last year and was studying at a business college.
Wiese advised people not to drive alone at night in areas that were not well lit, to lock their car doors and to plan their route in advance.
“People have to make sure they have enough petrol and that their cars are mechanically sound.
“If you suspect you’re being followed, drive to the nearest police station,” he said.
