Superintendent Louis Jacobs said the autoteller machine (ATM) was bombed around 2am on Wednesday in Jouberton.
Police on patrol saw a white BMW driving away from the scene.
A notice was sent to nearby police stations and Klerksdorp police spotted the vehicle.
The police chased the BMW and were shot at by a person or people inside the car.
No one was injured during the shooting.
The BMW then drove on to the R30 road between Ventersdorp and Klerksdorp.
Members of the Ventersdorp police closed the road.
The BMW then drove onto a dirt road and came to a halt in a field.
Police arrested one man close to where the car had been abandoned.
He was a 26-year-old police constable from Mogwase near Rustenburg.
On Wednesday night and Thursday morning police arrested two more men in Jouberton.
One of those arrested was a 30-year-old police constable of the Klerksdorp detectives division.
Soon afterwards police arrested two more men in Mogwase.
One of those arrested was a 30-year-old constable of the Mogwase uniformed division.
One person wanted by police in connection with the bombing was still at large, said Jacobs.
The five would be charged with malicious damage to property, two counts of attempted murder, theft of cash and intentional detonation of explosives. Investigations were continuing.
All three police officers have been suspended. Bail would be strongly opposed, said Jacobs.
The five men would be appearing before the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
