The murders of two school pupils during the school holidays have alarmed police, who have appealed to parents to be aware at all times as to where their children are.
Violent, anti-social behaviour involving children has police worried and they say it is happening because pupils are left without supervision during holidays.
In Umlazi two pupils, both from Ekwazini High School, were killed this week in two separate incidents.
At the weekend, Lonwabo Nkonyeni, a Grade 12 pupil, was stabbed to death at a friend’s party in the township’s F Section. According to police, Nkonyeni was killed for the Nike pants he was wearing.

His body was found just metres away from the house where the party had been held.
Four days later another pupil, Muzi Maphumulo, was stabbed by a fellow pupil after the two were involved in a fight over a girl.
Police spokesperson Captain Khephu Ndlovu said Maphumulo was standing near a tuckshop with his girlfriend when he was accosted by the suspect, who is also a school pupil.
“The suspect then pulled out a knife and stabbed Maphumulo in the chest. He died at the scene,” said Ndlovu.
The suspect is on the run, but police are hoping to make an arrest soon.
“The murders of two young people who were both at school is not right. Something needs to be done to deal with this problem.’
“It is worrying that children are dying at the hands of other children,” he said.
Ndlovu said parents needed to ensure they knew where their children were at all times.
“During the holidays, parents tend to give them more freedom and allow them to go to malls and other places as they please.”
So serious is the situation in Umlazi that police and the community have called for an urgent meeting to discuss the issue.
“Dealing with these problems involving children needs not only the police and teachers, but the community too,” said Ndlovu.
