I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

As most people know, deputy mayor Logie Naidoo is everywhere, and on Wednesday he almost found himself in the middle of a cash-in-transit heist involving a gang of seven heavily-armed gunmen.

But his quick-thinking security team hurried him to safety while his bodyguard Bhekani Ngubane leapt out of the vehicle and swung into action.

“Even though there was shooting going on, he was brilliant,” said Naidoo.

“At first, we thought all the commotion was an accident. But then we saw an overturned cash-in-transit vehicle and realised there was a heist under way.”

‘Even though there was shooting going on, he was brilliant’

And the robbery would have proved successful but for two members of the Port Shepstone Highway Patrol Unit, Inspectors Marc de Beer Wiid and Gawie Nel.

The two inspectors had been heading north when they saw a BMW parked on the opposite side of the N2 near the turn-off to Scottburgh.

On their way to investigate, they saw a convoy of three cash-in-transit vehicles heading south and a yellow bakkie following behind. When they arrived at the spot where the BMW had been parked, it had disappeared.

Realising a cash-in-transit robbery was about to take place, they accelerated, arriving at the scene of the crime in time to see the BMW and the yellow bakkie go to the front of the cash-in-transit convoy and ram the lead vehicle, which overturned.

The gang, armed with AK-47s, R-5s and 9mms, stopped a vehicle and ordered the occupants to get out and hand over their cellphones.

The gang fired at the police officers who were unable to return fire as there were civilians in the way.

Meanwhile, the deputy mayor, involved in one of his many official engagements, was about to drive straight into the crime scene.

Ngubane and another bodyguard, Xolani Magwaza, who was driving, realised what was happening.

Magwaza reversed to remove Naidoo out of harm’s way, while Ngubane rounded up the people on the side of the road and got them to safety, before keeping south-bound traffic at bay.

The gang fled in two getaway vehicles, which were later found abandoned. The police helicopter was called to search for the gang, but there was no sign of them.

“It was an incredible early-morning experience,” Naidoo said at a more peaceful function a few hours later.
