Orania: Exercise in Futility or dawn of Afrikaner Self-Determination

[I received this from a regular reader. Perhaps someone can translate it into english and just post it in the comments section of this article.

Very quickly, my own comments:-
1. Any experiment like Orania where whites are trying to learn to make themselves self-sufficient is bound to have long term value. It is a most valuable EXPERIMENT in proving to Whites what they are or are not capable of. I see the Orania folks as real pioneers. No matter what the future is, whether the races split or work together, there is a lot that Whites will have gained from Orania, if only to show the Blacks that we will not let ourselves be blackmailed by them in terms of labour. Even if Orania’s only purpose is to send a message to the blacks that we will be willing to GO IT ALONE – then Orania has served a purpose. But I think Orania can serve many purposes and all of it is worthwhile.

2. I think even the Blacks can learn from Orania. It may serve to show them how a people can organise their own society and be self-sufficient – which blacks admittedly also are NOT! Its not just Whites who depend on Blacks. Blacks also need us – even though many would never admit it and perhaps only some foreward-thinking ones realise this now.

3. Re: Masses.
The reason masses are not moving to Orania is because many feel there are easier options, like leaving the country or they don’t feel threatened enough. But that is no reason to doubt the value of Orania. Orania is an experiment which WHITES CAN TURN TO IN A MOMENT OF NEED. I’m not living in Orania now, but if the country goes to hell in a race war, then I’d be wanting to learn from the Orania people.

My conclusion is that Orania must continue and the people doing it must not doubt its value. Its experimental value for Whites and even Blacks (if the Whites choose to share that knowledge), is something.

Don’t worry about Van Zyl Slabbert’s whining about “racist past” and “racist future”. That’s your typical loser Liberal whining which says that the only hope for us Whites is to cling to the Blacks at all costs. Its a pathetic attitude. No we must show the Blacks that we’re not afraid – either of them, or going it alone. We need to stop being a bunch of wimps in front of the Blacks. We must be able to negotiate and deal with the blacks more realistically, and by always wanting to cling to them we’re showing weakness. Its pathetic really.

We Whites must stop being pathetic whiny losers and start standing up a bit. I think the Blacks will respect it. Nobody likes a bunch of babies. If we expect the Blacks to stop being babies then we too must stop acting like a bunch of loser babies ourselves. If we set an example, maybe the blacks will gravitate to it themselves. Maybe then there will be hope for this country.

I still can’t believe how in this country we’re letting the scum of the nation get a hold over all of us. Why are we bowing down to the scum? Why are we letting criminals and assorted rubbish rule our lives? What is wrong with all the people of this country that we’re letting this happen to us? Jan]

Baie dankie vir die informasie.

Ek dink dat Orania groei, maar nie vinnig genoeg nie – weereens, dit is my gevoel, en nie feit nie. Aan die ander kant, sal vinnige groei miskien ook nie goed wees nie. Wie weet was ons dan in laat…

Ek het so paar jaar terug met ‘n vriend gepraat. Die vriend boer met vrugte net buite Nelspruit. Daar is tans ‘n “Land Claim” in plek teen sy plaas. Dit is ‘n kwessie van maande voordat hy afgeskop word. Die ou is heel intelligent en hard werkend. Ek noem toe vir hom dat hy na Orania moet kyk. Hy moet die geld wat hy van die ANC af kry vat, en grond in Orania gaan koop – hy is ‘n Afrikaner en sal goed doen daar. Sy antwoord was “Is jy mal? Daai hoop ape? Ons het laas nag op SABC gesien hoe sleg hulle werkers daar behandel en dat dit basies ‘n Boere Mafia is wat die plek regeer!”. ek noem toe vir hom dat die selfde SABC wat hom die nuus gewys het, ook die mondstuk van die ANC Regime is, en dat die ANC niks meer sal wil hê as dat Orania vanself inmekaar moet stort nie. Dit het hom so bietjie laat dink…ek sal in April sien of dit hom genoeg laat dink het…Hier is hoe ek dit sien:

1. Orania bestaan en dit is ‘n feit waarmee die NSA regering moet vrede maak

2. Die ANC besef dat, alhoewel baie Afrikaners in NSA nie agter Orania staan en die Volkstaat beweging ondersteun nie, enige politieke, wetlike of fisiese aanval teen Orania as ‘n direkte aanval op Afrikaners beskou sal word wêreld wyd.

3. Dat Orania hulle dalk ‘n makliker manier gee om van die wit duiwels in Azania ontslae te raak.

Conclusions

The paper highlighted the historical roots of the establishment of Orania and also focussed on the nature and identity of the people of the settlement. Besides these focal issues, the administration of Orania and its position and functioning within the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature, the viability of the settlement, the daily life and quality of life as well as perceptions and views of Orania, particularly as regards self-determination for the Afrikaner, among Afrikaners in the rest of South Africa were also discussed. The investigation also revealed and elicited the complexities and fluidity of ethnicity within the context of Orania.

The study of Orania showed that its establishment is a manifestation of a cultural resistance movement and reflects features of other nativistic as well as cultural revitalization movements. In this sense it is a continuation of the Volkswag as a combination of a nativistic and rivitalization movement of which mention was made above. Note the strong influence of Prof. Carel Boshoff as the leader who had the prophetic vision to lead a group of Afrikaners away from a stressful situation of rapid cultural change to an area where they can assert their identity and live according to a moral code that is based on the primordial Christian values of the Afrikaner.

In spite of the accentuation of the primordial values of the Afrikaner in Orania, one was rather amazed to observe contradictions, fluidity and the manifestation of self-interest in circumstances where a way of life is maintained with predominantly homogenous cultural features. The field research in Orania revealed the continuous interplay between the primordial and instrumentalist dimensions of ethnicity as strong driving forces that permeate the management and activities of the settlement, and at the same time reflecting the fluidity and contradictions inherent in the phenomenon of ethnicity. Similar contradictions are also apparent in contemporary South African society where the ruling party as well as provisions in the Constitution, prescribe and promote a society based on equality, human dignity and non-discrimination. However, these noble principles and ideals are not fully pursued and applied by the present ANC government. In the implementation of its policy, affirmative action in the workplace and sport quotas based on racial grounds prevail. In addition mention was also recently made of the possibility of bringing back the racial classification system to redress inequalities of the past. This state of affairs has compelled Dr Frederick Van Zyl Slabbert, the former leader of the official opposition during the time of apartheid and a person with liberal political orientations, recently to say: “If you make yourself and others hostage to a racist past you budget generously for a racist future” (Van Zyl Slabbert 2006:8).

Lastly the question should be answered whether Orania is a futile exercise or will it succeed in establishing a viable ethnic state for Afrikaners in the western part of the Northern Cape Province? The answer it would seem is that regardless of what has been achieved during the last fifteen years in Orania, unless significant numbers of Afrikaners are convinced of accepting the volkstaat ideal and move to Orania as a viable alternative to their position in South Africa, a full-fledged volkstaat will not become a reality in the Northern Cape Province. The negative perceptions of Afrikaners in the rest of South Africa about the Afrikaner settlement in Orania, suggest that the idea of Afrikaner self-determination in its own ethnic state in the Northern Cape Province will not be realised in the foreseeable future.
