Bloemfontein – The executive mayor of Motheo district municipality in Bloemfontein, Haniswa Chaine, may be in trouble after porn was allegedly found on her computer, and an investigation has been launched.
It’s the second time that the municipality has been in the news in connection with alleged computer abuse.
Senior official Martin Vermaak, who was the general manager of the budget, was recently fired for abusing the internet while at work.
Apparently he had repeatedly chatted to women on lonely hearts websites, instead of paying attention to the municipal budget.
Chatting to women on websites
Vermaak, a married man and a member of both the Bloemfontein Afrikaner Club and the Vryburgers had been in trouble before about porn on his website at the office.
The Son newspaper reported extensively on his woes.
Vermaak was furious at the Motheo staff and wanted to sue them for not protecting him and leaking information to the media.
He was recently dismissed after a disciplinary hearing and is apparently planning to appeal the decision.
A municipal spokesperson of the Motheo district municipality confirmed to Volksblad newspaper that the incident with the mayor had taken place and that there was an enquiry against her after the discovery of porn on her computer.
IT specialists had been appointed to establish how the porn had got there.
It was thought that perhaps a family member who visited the office from time to time, and who had access to her username, could shed more light on the matter.
The municipal spokesperson said Chaine had not broached the disciplinary code, but the code of conduct for members would determine how serious matters were.
Used when she was out of office
Usernames to log on to the computer were confidential and ought to be treated as such.
Furthermore, computers were municipal property and were for the sole use of municipal employees.
Dennis Ntsepe, the Motheo district Municipality Speaker was empowered by municipal regulations to conduct the inquiry.
Volksblad newspaper heard that the matter had been treated in confidence up to now, and had not yet been tabled by the Motheo council.
The newspaper tried repeatedly to discuss this with her, but the person who answered her phone kept saying she was in meetings.
Richard Mokotedi, Chaine’s spokesperson, also confirmed the inquiry. He said porn had been found on her PC on two separate occasions.
“The incidents occurred while the mayor was out of town on official business.”
Mokotedi said several officials knew her username and password and the inquiry would establish who had logged on to her computer. He said the affair was not being treated as a secret and as soon as the inquiry was complete, the report would be tabled in the council chamber.
