I happened across a website dealing in rare coins and chatted to them. They mentioned to me that you do NOT pay capital gains tax on rare coins and that rare coins (which are graded and certified) can be bought and sold across the world.
While chatting to them they mentioned to me that ZAR coins (old Transvaal Republic – from the time of Paul Kruger and the 2nd Anglo-Boer war), were hot property all over the world now. These coins have amazing value (as do those new Mandela coins).
He told me that Paul Kruger had a Jewish friend called “Sammy Marx” (apparently there is a museum to him – which I must go and find now!). Sammy Marx apparently was stinking rich and made even more money than the Oppenheimers! Apparently at one time he owned more land than the Oppenheimers would later own.
Paul Kruger allowed Sammy Marx to mint some “tickies” (what is a “ticky” or “tickie”? Is it 1 pence or 10 pence?). Anyhow, one of these Sammy Marx Tickies is now worth R1.2 million. He told me that graded and certified ZAR coins can be worth stacks of money.
