A Congolese couple living at The Ridge apartment complex in Berea in the downtown slum area of Johannesburg was arrested after witnesses and the emergency ambulance service warned police that their 6-year-old daughter had been tortured to death.
The 32-year-old dad and her 22-year-old stepmother were arrested after emergency services were summonsed to try and save the child’s life, but she had already been dead ‘for quite a while’, with gruesome bruises bearing silent witness to her tortuous death.
Police Captain Bhekizizwe Mavundla said witnesses had seen the couple repeatedly beat the little girl with their fists, and strangling her with an electrical cord on Sunday.
When the paramedics were finally summonsed to the scene jpwever, the child had ‘been dead for quite a while’, said their spokesman Synock Matobako.
Police will also investigate whether the Congolese couple lived in SA legally.
They were expected for a remand hearing at Johannesburg magistrate’s court today.
