A shop was set alight when angry Soshanguve South residents went on the rampage at the weekend, damaging properties belonging to foreigners.
Community members accused the people – who they say hail from Mozambique and Zimbabwe – of being involved in crime in the informal settlement.
Trouble started on Saturday night when locals set alight three shacks belonging to foreigners in an apparent revenge attack. Several people were injured in the incident.
The residents gathered on Sunday in a section of the informal settlement and decided to target the shop.
Police fired rubber bullets to disperse the angry crowd and 17 people were arrested on charges of public violence.
According to the police on the scene, community members claimed that the owner of the shop – who was not in at the time of the incident – knew the killer/killers of a local resident murdered last month.
It is not clear how the man – who has already been buried – was killed.
Police said they had asked people to come forward with information regarding the killing, but no one had done so.
One resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said there had been an increase in crime in the area over the past few months.
The residents blamed foreigners for the crimes, which included armed robbery, mugging, housebreaking and murder.
“We have had enough of these Zimbabweans and Mozambicans who are involved in criminal activities. Most of them are unemployed and they rob people of their belongings,” she said.
The resident said the police had failed to solve many of the cases.
“These foreigners commit crimes because they know they cannot be traced by the police because they do not have identity documents,” she said.
Police spokesperson Captain Lucas Sithole said 17 people were arrested on Sunday.
Sithole said the crime combating unit and police officers from Akasia police station were called in to deal with the situation.
“The situation is under control and police will be keeping a close watch in the area,” said Sithole.
He said it would appear that the violence was due to a conflict between locals and foreigners.
“The residents accused the foreigners of being involved in criminal activities,” said Sithole.
He said the situation was still tense late on Sunday and that police were patrolling the area.
