I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

While the South African police services banned the release of crime statistics to the media this week, it was revealed that more than 500 hijackings were committed in the north Durban region in the first six months of this year.
At least 68 vehicles were hijacked last month.
But provincial police spokesmen and other senior officers were warned on Wednesday that the moratorium was in force and declined to release hijacking and other crime statistics for the south Durban region, which could easily double the figure.
‘I would not have released those figures’ |
The south region includes Umlazi, Isipingo, Lamontville, Chatsworth and various other areas.
Shortly before the moratorium came into effect, police spokesperson Vasie Naidoo released statistics for the north Durban region which stretches from the Durban central police station to Glendale, near Stanger.
An average of 80 hijackings are committed in the region each month.
A spokesperson for the SAPS south Durban region, Capt Bhekithemba Zondi, said he was unable to release the figures because of the ban.
He and other officers were summoned to a meeting on Wednesday and briefed about the moratorium.
‘Then print it … we are no longer permitted to release them’ |
The ban, according to police headquarters in Pretoria, was expected to be renewed in about 12 months.
The provincial minister of safety and security, Nyanga Ngubane, released startling hijacking statistics for the province in parliament in Ulundi last month. He said that more than 5 000 hijacking incidents a month had been reported to police in the province.
Police have disputed the figure.
When questioned, a senior official in the minister’s office said the figures had been released by the provincial police management.
He referred The Mercury to the police crime statistics officer, Senior Superintendantt Dennis Moon who said: “I would not have released those figures . . . it was not meant for the media.”
When told that they had been released by the minister in parliament, he said: “Well, we will have to investigate.”
Police spokesperson Bala Naidoo said that if the figures had been quoted by the minister in parliament: “Then print it . . . we are no longer permitted to release them.”
