This is what happens when police cannot protect local communities. It’s called the stench of revenge and community-justice.
Dec 3 2007 One of three armed men who had kicked down a door in Phillippi and stabbed the homeowner was captured by the local community.
They first assaulted him with sticks and stones — then placed several tyres on him and torched him.
Policewoman Bernadine Steyn said the three men were armed with knives and a firearm. The woman was not injured and no shots were fired.
“As the three (robbers) were about to flee, members of the community caught one of them, assaulted him with sticks and stones, after which several tyres were put on him and set alight. He died at the scene,” said Steyn.
Police have opened dockets on murder and robbery.
The local community members are asked to call the investigating officer, Abie Brown, at the Nyanga police station at 021 380 3300 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111 if they have ‘any information’.
