South Africans feel they have more control over their lives and are 11 percent happier today than they were in 1990, with happiness among black people rising the most – by 22 percent, a survey has found.
Most South Africans expressed optimism about the country’s future but many are concerned about corruption in government and the private sector.
These were among the findings of the Markinor/Centre for International and Comparative Politics World Values Survey presented on Thursday.
The research, conducted between 1981 and 2006 and based on interviews with 3 000 South Africans over the age of 16, revealed that 95 percent of respondents were “very proud” or “quite proud” to be South African, including 96 percent of blacks, 92 percent of whites, 98 percent of coloureds and 92 percent of Indians.
Most people interviewed, 78 percent said they were “rather” or “very happy” with their lives, including 75 percent of blacks, 95 percent of whites, 91 percent of coloureds and 83 percent of Indians.
