698 people died violently in SA police custody in 2006 – up from 379 in 1994…
October 4 2007 – An incredible new statistic which is unprecedented in South African history, is the Independent Complaints Commission’s report to parliament this week that a total of 698 people have died violently in police custody.
In 1994 — just before the abolishment of the apartheid-state — they also registered the highest number of people who ever died violently in police custody up to that point, which had been 379 people – still unacceptably high.
At that time, the Human Rights Commission and Amnesty International raised an international media rage about these statistics.

However,a similar international reaction has not beene heard about the 698 people who have died violently while in police custody under ANC-rule this past year.
In its 2006/7 annual report tabled in Parliament, the ICD states that 698 people died during that period, with the provinces of Gauteng and Kwa-Zulu-Natal accounting for most of the deaths.
This is 77 more deaths than the previous financial year, when 621 people died.
In Gauteng 169 people died and the KZN figure is 153.
Shootings contributed 54 percent of the number of people killed by police. The shooting incidents occurred ‘while police officers were conducting their operations’ the report states diplomatically.
In terms of the figures, 97 suspects were shot by the police while committing a crime, 31 were fatally shot while escaping from custody and 141 were shot and killed during the course of arrest.
The ICD stated ‘it was concerned about the fact that four innocent civilians, who happened to be bystanders, died when caught in crossfire between criminals and the police.
Th is so-called ‘ police watchdog – also recorded that 31 suspects died in detention after sustaining injuries, 46 lost their lives before they were taken into custody, 108 died of natural causes and 94 ‘committed suicide.’
44 people knocked down by police vehicles, 23 dead from police negligence:
Also of concern to the ICD was the fact ‘that 44 innocent people died as a result of being knocked down by police vehicles and 23 were killed due to police negligence. ‘
Police also turn their weapons on their own families:
The report also showed that 56 people died as a result of domestic violence-related incidents and off-duty shootings by police officers.
84% INCREASE IN POLICE VIOLENCE TARGETTING THEIR OWN FAMILIES:
This is a whopping 84 percent increase from the 2005/6 period when ‘only’ nine people lost their lives in this category.
THE COPS ARE ALSO BECOMING MORE CRIMINAL IN SOUTH AFRICA:
The ICD recorded that there was an 8 percent increase in the number of criminal offences they were investigating involving members of the police.
They investigated 1,787 cases involving police officers during the 2006/7 financial year. This figure is up from 1, 643 in 2005/6.
