The SA National Defence Force has suspended night training and navigation exercises at its Infantry School base in Oudtshoorn following an incident on Monday in which four soldiers were injured in an explosion.
Four soldiers were injured “following an explosion of an AP 65 grenade high explosive blind (previously fired, but not exploded) at the base’s training area,” the defence department said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred at about 8:40pm during a night navigation exercise.
One of the four soldiers was admitted to the Medi-Clinic in George and was in a serious condition.
The others were being treated at the military sickbay in Oudtshoorn.
Night training and navigation exercises had been suspended and would only resume once all training ranges had been confirmed to be safe.
A board of inquiry would investigate the incident, the department said. – Sapa
