SA: ANC ‘War Vets’ back Zuma for ANC top job

WARNING: This is Version 1 of my old archive, so Photos will NOT work and many links will NOT work. But you can find articles by searching on the Titles. There is a lot of information in this archive. Use the SEARCH BAR at the top right. Prior to December 2012; I was a pro-Christian type of Conservative. I was unaware of the mass of Jewish lies in history, especially the lies regarding WW2 and Hitler. So in here you will find pro-Jewish and pro-Israel material. I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

[Essentially the MK cadres are the ANC’s version of “War Vets”. Bunch of wankers! Jan]

Five of the Umkhonto wesizwe (MK) veterans’ provincial structures have endorsed ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma as their preferred candidate for the party presidency.

The MK Veterans Association, comprising members of the ANC’s former military wing, does not have rights to vote at the ruling party’s elective conference, although it is pressing for a change to its constitution that would allow it these.

Cosatu’s central committee has overwhelmingly endorsed Zuma, but has been castigated by the ANC for issuing a list of preferred candidates for the ruling party’s top positions.

‘We want to engage in politics as we understand politics’

Four of the nine provincial structures of the MK Veterans’ Association are continuing to discuss their preferences.

Western Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and North West have decided to endorse the secretly canvassed list of the so-called left in the tripartite alliance that puts Zuma at the top.

The list was first publicly flagged by the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) and adopted by Mpumalanga’s ANC provincial executive committee.

If all the MK veterans’ provincial structures endorse Zuma, the association will have adopted a list supported by Cosatu, the ANCYL, Mpumalanga ANC, Young Communist League, and key leaders in the SACP. Of these, only the ANCYL and Mpumalanga have voting rights in the ANC.

This list proposes Zuma for ANC president; ANC secretary-general Kgalema Motlanthe for deputy president; SACP chair Gwede Mantashe for secretary-general; and parliamentary Speaker Baleka Mbete for deputy secretary-general; former Mpumalanga premier Mathews Phosa for treasurer; and Foreign Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma as chairperson of the ANC.

‘We are trying to get representation at the conference’

The MK veterans’ North West delegation, however, has named ANC stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela for the chair – the first ANC-aligned group to have suggested her for one of the top six positions.

The association says it is to encourage its members to lobby for its preferred candidates when succession lists are discussed in ANC structures.

Although it claims a membership of more than 45 000 veterans, the association does not have a huge influence in the ruling party.

Meanwhile, MK Veterans Association chairperson Kebby Maphatsoe has decried the “problems” in the ANC and suggested that MK’s “advanced leadership” could restore unity to the divided organisation.

Speaking after the association’s three-day national conference at Luthuli House in Johannesburg, he said the veterans would try to exert influence from within the ANC.

He reiterated that the association was not a military wing but a political arm of the ANC.

“We want to engage in politics as we understand politics. We believe we’ll be able to bring harmony.”

The veterans want the party’s constitution amended to give their association a status equal to that enjoyed by the youth and women’s leagues. This would also give it voting rights.

At the ANC’s policy conference in June this year, delegates undertook to debate this subject at the December conference – the only forum at which the constitution may be amended.

“We are trying to get representation at the conference… The conference should decide if we’re getting voting rights,” said Maphatsoe.
