Diepsloot had “calmed down” by late Sunday night after rioters stoned police and motorists on the R511, said Johannesburg metro police officials.
The R511 had been re-opened by 9.15pm and traffic was flowing normally, said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.
A crowd of between 100 and 200 people ran riot on the road after police opened fire on them with rubber bullets while trying to rescue a man they had been beating for alleged rape and robbery, said Pretoria police spokesperson Captain Lucas Sithole.
Sithole said nobody had filed charges against the man yet. He was in a serious condition in a local hospital.
The group stoned at least three private vehicles, damaging them, but injuring no-one. – Sapa
