For an inspector attached to Hillbrow police station, Sean Twala lived the high life.
He owns a plush home in the upmarket suburb of Brackendowns, in Alberton, and drives an Audi and a VW Polo.
According to investigators, Twala also hijacked buildings in Joburg, abusing his status as a member of the Hillbrow housing anti-hijacking task team to turn on the very people he was meant to protect.
On Monday, just an hour before he was to appear in the Johannesburg magistrate’s court on charges related to building hijackings, he was arrested – for the second time in 10 months.

Twala, who is out on bail, faces charges of corruption, extortion, intimidation and defeating the ends of justice. He was arrested by members of the Booysens building anti-hijacking unit.
The unit, headed by Superintendent Gregory Beck, first arrested Twala and his alleged accomplice, Inspector Telo Mota, in September 2006 after the pair were accused of running a building hijacking scam in southern Joburg.
The unit is also investigating several other cases against the two former police officers.
While Twala is standing trial for the charges against him, Mota has evaded arrest and is on the run.
Twala and Mota are former members of the Hillbrow housing anti-hijacking task team, whose job is to evict illegal tenants from buildings.
However, instead of handing the buildings back to the owners, investigators say the duo would move in their own tenants and collect the rent.
Investigators allege Twala and Mota would force people out of the buildings by falsifying eviction orders.
Just an hour before he was supposed to have reported to the Johannesburg magistrate’s court, Twala was lured to Booysens police station on Monday on the pretence of signing documents. He was arrested while waiting in the police station.
The new charges against him relate to a R3 000 bribe he allegedly accepted from a woman who wanted to evict people who had illegally occupied the house she had bought.
According to Beck, Twala allegedly told the woman the R3 000 was the fee required to obtain an eviction order.
After allegedly taking the money, Twala never returned the woman’s calls.
A separate charge of assault has also been laid against Twala for allegedly beating up a Booysens mechanic last December.
According to the charge sheet, Twala had taken his car to the mechanic for repairs and had allegedly assaulted the mechanic after he told him that thieves had broken into the car in the workshop. Twala is also accused of pointing a gun at the mechanic.
Twala’s corruption trial began in the Johannesburg magistrate’s court last week.
