I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

Police were investigating a hostage incident in central Cape Town which left the alleged hostage taker dead and three others injured, they said on Sunday.

Inspector Bernadine Steyn said several cases of attempted murder were under investigation after the hostage drama ended when police stormed a restaurant, shooting dead the hostage taker and releasing the hostages.

Police have identified the 26-year-old hostage taker as David Kula from Site B, Khayelitsha.

Steyn said a police team set off a stun grenade and several shots were fired when they entered the restaurant shortly after 6.30pm.

“The police went in. Several shots were fired and the suspect [the alleged hostage taker], a 26-year-old male, was fatally wounded.”

Kula allegedly entered the premises at around 10am and fired several shots inside, wounding a male employee in the leg. Some of the staff ran out including the injured man who was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Another female employee was also hospitalised but later discharged after she was shot in the buttocks.

After storming the restaurant, police released two hostages, one of whom was the man’s wife who had been shot in the leg earlier.

The restaurant was Nyoni’s Kraal, near the provincial legislature. – Sapa
