[Crime is the problem. And who brought the crime? The ANC – unquestionably. Jan]
The sanctity of churches is now not even enough to deter criminals from targeting church leaders and worshippers.
On Sunday, leaders of different denominations, business owners and members of the public joined together at St Paul’s Anglican Church in Durban for a mass prayer service against crime which they said was “out of control” in the province.
Cardinal Wilfrid Napier, of the Roman Catholic Church said in his main address that the cause for lack of peace in the country was crime.
“Poverty, unemployment and helplessness combined are important factors that society needs to deal with in order to eradicate crime which was affecting almost every citizen in the country”.
‘People must be responsible and we should all take steps to make our society safe’ |
“People must be responsible and we should all take steps to make our society safe,” he said.
Apart from crime, the leaders also took turns to pray for street children, abused women and children and refugees.
Representatives from informal and formal business sectors also took a few minutes each at the pulpit and prayed for business owners and the problems they were experiencing.
Hlonono Khomo, who represented the taxi industry, spoke of the problems faced by the industry.
He said the industry was increasingly being affected by crime and that their passengers were falling victim to criminals.
“Crime directly affects us and our businesses. Our customers and taxi drivers are being held up and robbed at gun point. Some of our drivers have even been hijacked or have had their vehicles stolen.
“No one is safe because we are all becoming or have been a victim of crime,” he said.
Reverend Sibusiso Mncube, of the Anglican Church said that crime affected everyone regardless of race or the area one lived in.
“For some time churches have not taken an active role in the fight against crime, but that is all changing now,” he said.
“Besides having to deal with the effects that crime is having on people in our church, criminals are moving into churches and robbing us. There have also been cases when they have demanded church offerings,” Mncube said.
As a result of this the Durban Ministers Network decided to get together to look at ways in which the churches could get involved in the battle against crime
“We can no longer stand back and rely on the government and police to sort out the problem, we as church leaders need to use our platform to discuss social issues,” he said.
Those who attended the service said they were committed to working with their churches to assist their communities and young people. There was also a large focus on strengthening family values and morals.
At the end of the programme, the church opened the floor to the public and took in their suggestions on ways in which the churches could help in the war against crime.
