An ANC city councillor has ap-peared in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court over possession of an unlicensed firearm that has alleg-edly been linked to several shootings and killings .

Xolani Nyanga, 41, ward councillor for Harare in Khayelitsha and a part of Tafelsig in Mitchell’s Plain, was arrested on Saturday at his Khayelitsha home after he had allegedly fired several shots at a motorist following a collision.

Police confiscated a unlicensed firearm which has been put through preliminary ballistic and forensic tests.

According to the charge sheet and case docket, the firearm was allegedly used in more than one killing and other serious violent crimes dating from 1995.

Nyanga applied for bail on Tuesday but Magistrate Maya Prag postponed the matter until later this week to allow police to check information on him.

Nyanga then said in front of a packed courtroom: “I’m a councillor working in the communit, and it will not be hard for the court or the police to find me.”

Prag responded: “The police need to verify information about you and other aspects of the case.”

According to the case docket, Nyanga was involved in an accident on Saturday. He allegedly opened fire when the other car drove away.

Several witnesses allegedly identified Nyanga and alerted the police who arrested him and confiscated the gun.

Approached for comment, ANC provincial spokesperson Garth Strachan said they had asked for a report from the regional executive.
