Swedish ambassador to Zimbabwe Sten Rylander on Friday slammed as “disgusting” police action in the country as an international row over the brutal treatment of opposition officials intensified.
In a letter published in the Zimbabwe Independent newspaper, Rylander said the events of the past week were an evil dream.
“How is it possible that these disgusting police actions can take place in free and independent Zimbabwe?” Rylander asked.
Pictures of badly-beaten opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai and a number of his colleagues have shocked Western nations. Tsvangirai, the leader of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) was arrested Sunday as he tried to attend a prayer rally.
Rylander asked if Zimbabwe was currently reliving the time of struggle against apartheid South Africa in the 1980s.
Angered by mounting international condemnation, President Robert Mugabe on Thursday told Western leaders to “go hang.” – Sapa-dpa
