A US Marine meets up with me again… God Help America!

[I was delighted to hear from a really old friend of mine from the 1990’s, an American who was in the US Marines and who fought in Vietnam. He searched for me to update himself on events here in Southern Africa. The two of us used to talk a lot in the days when Bill Clinton was the president. We hated Clinton equally!! (I have a lot of sympathy for American soldiers). I laughed at the comment of this old soldier about the Clintons:- I heard the other day about Hillary being groomed at the next President of the USA. The “Hillary make-over” is working. Oh God! The Democrats leave America with bigger strategic problems than before. I remarked to him that Jimmy Carter left the world in such a mess. Look at Zimbabwe and Iran – both legacies of Jimmy Carter’s presidency. Iran – a strategic nightmare of note. It was at the end of the Carter Presidency that the Soviets invaded Afghanistan… I think the Soviets were sensing American weakness and struck. (Luckily Reagan fought back hard during the Soviet offensives of the 1980s and saved the day). Then Bill Clinton left the USA’s military/intelligence system weakened with Al Qaeda having snuck in through the door. (While bombing Serb Christians and helping the Muslims!) So the question in my mind is this: What will Hillary (or the next Democratic President), leave us with? Putin is an aggressive boy… already… so… when he sees a Democrat President… won’t he be much more aggressive? As it is, he’s already claiming the North Pole… What moves will he make next when he senses more American weakness? Putin is tough and clever. I personally admire Putin’s ability, I think he is a dangerous man. Think he is a clever, determined and dangerous man who wants to assert Russia big time. His time may be coming… Is America not ending up in ever deeper strategic difficulties? Wasn’t Ronald Reagan the last American president who actually managed to pull off some victories of note? Scary stuff. The next election in S.Africa is not looking good, and neither is the next one in the USA. More fun ahead for all of us hey!? All I can say is: God help America – and us too! Jan] |
