[I do find it extremely suspicious that the CIO would leak info to The Zimbabwean. If the CIO did do this, then it tells me the CIO wants The Zimbabwean to spread this story around in order to cause some kind of damage. A plot by the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) to buy out the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) led by Arthur Mutambara, which involved an offer of funds and farms, has been exposed. Sources within the state intelligence department revealed a plan, which Mutambara has resisted, initially brought to him last month after his with Morgan Tsvangirai, founder of the labour-backed opposition, and other opposition leaders.

Mutambara confirmed that the Mugabe regime’s attempts to divide and rule the opposition had been exposed and rejected. He has called for all opposition parties to present a united front against Zanu (PF) for next year’s polls.

Information leaked to The Zimbabwean by one of the CIO agents involved in the plot, alleges that a senior member of Mutambara’s party embraced the plan and tried to convince the former firebrand student leader into accepting huge amounts of money and other favours from government.

Efforts to obtain comment from the official were not successful as he was said to be away. “Mutambara was approached and offered money, a farm, and protection from being arrested or beaten up by state security agents,” a source said. “This has been going on for sometime now. In fact, Arthur was approached through his party officials whilst he was in custody last month with the offer but it seems he is not willing to take it up, despite assurances from his colleagues interested in the deal.”

The sources revealed that the plot, with Mugabe’s full approval, involved using Mutambara’s wing of the MDC to parrot Zanu (PF) propaganda about the country having been affected by western sanctions, lambaste the other MDC wing for the alleged perpetration of violence and participate in skewed elections.

“With Mutambara’s side up and contesting the elections, they would pass for free and fair,” said the source.
