Northern Cape police used a helicopter and stun grenades to disperse hundreds of people who tried to stop two police raids in Kimberley over the weekend. Nobody was injured, said Superintendent Mashay Gamieldien. On Friday evening, a helicopter had to be used to disperse about 200 people who attacked police raiding a house in Delta street, Collville, for drugs. One person was arrested on charges of dealing in mandrax. On Saturday evening, police raiding a shebeen in Dassievoe(171)«l street, Roodepan, used stun grenades to disperse a crowd of about 150 people who attacked them, damaging police vehicles. No arrests were made. The raids were part of anti-crime operations in Kimberley, Roodepan and Galeshewe involving about 150 police over the weekend. Gamieldien said 223 people were arrested, mostly for less serious offences. They included 42 wanted suspects. – Sapa |
