Important: Dropping Certain AfricanCrisis Mailing Lists

Folks, I used to use certain mailing lists as a way of getting certain news to people. It was a good system which has served me well for the last 2 years – but it is becoming difficult to manage while the benefits are not as great as they once were. Basically every news article which is posted on the site is sent out to one of 10 different recipients/mailing lists. The “Full News Service” as well as the “News Alerts” system were not bad, but they add a lot of work to me, which I cannot delegate. Many times I also get complaints from people on those lists that they get too much email. AfricanCrisis will be moving more and more towards a system of 24/7 news posting. By later this year, AfricanCrisis will be getting news updates on the hour. Many people are indeed finding it more convenient to go to the website – which is important because through their activity, they’re also helping to push AfricanCrisis up through the rankings. All activity is good. I am thinking seriously of scrapping the “Full News Service” and “News Alerts” mailing lists and replacing them with a nice, Daily Digest. That way, if you’re on a mailing list you can get the news for the day, at “midnight” on the AfricanCrisis server (which is about 7-8am S.African Time). This should work well for people who still want mail. I have toyed with 2-4 emails per day – sort of “Intra-day digests” – so that you get a news summary every 6-12 hours depending on the option you choose. Would that interest anyone? The rest of the folks can go to the site any time, as it will update all day and night long. The process will not be that smooth at first… but I am hoping that before the end of 2007, that you’ll be able to go to AfricanCrisis at the top of any hour and you’ll see new news! I must also build in an Announcements section where other website owners, group leaders, organisation leaders, blog owners, etc can come and make announcements about activities and launches and where it will go online on short notice. There is a *LOT* of work for me to do… but I’m hoping that by year end, with the help of the Volunteers, that AfricanCrisis will simply amaze you and that AfricanCrisis will have features which even certain professional websites will not have!!
