[Some American soldiers are having a bit of fun, and making the most of what they’re doing. That soldier lying on the ground, holding up his helmet on a stick reminds me of an uncle of mine here in S.Africa, who volunteered to fight in World War II. He ended up fighting in North Africa and Italy against the Germans. He told the story of how, some days, he and his pals would put tins/cans on their heads, while they were in trenches. Then, every now and then, they would take these tins off, and compare to see how close the bullets had come to hitting them. One day, he turned around, and his friend’s entire head had been shot off.

Soldiers have a horrible task, and if it wasn’t for some of their bizarre humour, they would probably lose their minds. I admire them. They’re doing the most difficult task that can be asked of any person. Jan]
