[Yesterday PW Botha phoned me to discuss the Broederbond posting I put up. I will put that up tomorrow.

Then he told me that General Magnus Malan, who at one time commanded the SADF and who also became Minister of Defence is bringing out a new book. It is called: “My Lewe in Die Suid Afrikanse Weermag” (“My Life in the South African Defence Force”). I think it will only be in Afrikaans.

PW Botha says he thinks this will be a very important book.

So if anyone spots it, when it comes out, let me know. I have no idea who will publish it. It might even be a good book to sell in my book store.

I will be sad if this book only comes out in Afrikaans because it will deprive people outside S.Africa, especially the supporters of Afrikaners, from having the chance to read it.

But first, let’s see what’s in the book. I look forward to book reviews and comments from Afrikaans readers. Perhaps, we can look at translating valuable portions of the book if need be.

It always delights me when memoirs and such things come out. I DO SUSPECT, that certain juicy things may be left out for fear of ANC prosecution. Nevertheless, I am very curious to see what Malan has to say about the wars which were fought which he commanded.

At one time I had a lot of respect for Malan. In the mid 1980’s, to me, he cut an impressive figure, determined to fight the Red Menace. But since he departed from politics I don’t know much about him and cannot comment. I get the impression PW Botha thinks highly of him. Jan]
