[This is a note to me from a Paratrooper in the SADF who was there. The SADF did not do the shooting… the black troops in the Ciskei army did the shooting. But parked, not too far away, were many white troops from the S.African Army. They knew beforehand the ANC wanted to create an incident and they were there to backup the Ciskei troops if need be. As it was, they did nothing. The paratrooper remarked to me, that the casualties at Bisho were light, and the 2 1/2 minutes of shooting you see on the video was done with normal military rifles. He said that if machineguns had been used, it would have been a very different story. So all in all, despite the propaganda, the ANC’s crowd of 60,000 got off pretty lightly. So Bisho, like Sharpeville, was really created for its overseas propaganda value and nothing more. Jan] Hello Jan How do I know this? I was there when it happened! L. |
