[Disgusting. Jan] A hammer believed to have been used in the brutal attack on a nine-year-old girl was found in a river by searching relatives and neighbours at the weekend. While police are tight-lipped about the investigation, the child’s grandmother on Sunday confirmed that the hammer was found after the child’s uncle and others searched a nearby river bank. Neighbours and relatives suspect the hammer was used in the attack during which the nine-year-old girl was raped and left for dead on Thursday. ‘I really don’t know how she survived’ Nothing was stolen from her Kuils River home, except a hammer. According to her grandmother, the girl had stayed home as her school was closed for Ascension Day. “I left the house at 5.15am and my son left at 5.50am. He usually leaves the key with a neighbour who gets her ready for school so that she can leave at 7am. But school was closed so she stayed at home,” said the grandmother. There had been some confusion and the neighbour thought she had gone to school. When the child’s grandmother and uncle returned shortly after 6pm, they found the girl unconscious and badly injured. According to the grandmother, the doctors believed the hammer was used in the attack. “She’s still in hospital. There is a chance that she will recover. The doctors say she was unconscious for about 10 hours. “I really don’t know how she survived,” said the grandmother. The girl had to undergo surgery to her womb and a CAT scan revealed that she had a skull fracture. “There has been a slight improvement in her condition over the weekend. We are all praying for her recovery,” she said. Last week’s attack took place at the same block of flats in Sarepta from where seven-year-old Renata Ismail went missing in 1997. This weekend the nine-year-old’s uncle and several neighbours mounted a search for any evidence which might lead to the rapist’s capture. The party split into two groups which combed a nearby river bank. On Sunday they found the hammer and a T-shirt at the river. The items were handed to the police. Police spokesperson Bernadine Steyn said she could neither deny nor confirm that the weapon had been found as this formed part of the investigation. Steyn said no suspects had been arrested and because the girl was still unconscious, an identikit had yet to be drawn up.
