An Old School Chum of mine comments about Blacks & AIDS

[I was visiting an old school chum of mine recently, whom I went to school with in Rhodesia – Sean. Now Sean has never been overtly racist. He really does not want to say negative things about blacks. Even at times in the past when I ranted about them, he did not take me too seriously. I might add that Sean was an instructor in the S.African army in the mid-1980’s. And Sean *LOVES* Africa. He is crazy about Africa, the animals, and the bush. If he could, I’m sure he’d be a game ranger or something like that. As it is, he holds a senior position in a well known company, taking care of their security country-wide. When I was visiting Sean on the weekend, we were chatting when he made this remark: “No matter how much I try to fool myself, I have to admit Blacks are useless!” Then he went on to tell me about the problems he had had training blacks and that now, whenever he gets a chance, he hires a white guy. He went on to tell me about some of his recent adventures in Zambia. He was saying what a lovely country Zambia was but how completely broken it is. A Policeman wanted to fine him, and pulled out a piece of foolscap paper which he tore out of a book, in order to write up a fine! Then, when they had to go to the Police station, he had to put the Cop in his truck to take him to the Police station! Sean managed to bribe his way out of trouble by giving the cop 50,000 Kwacha (about R50 – US$9). Then the Cop asked him for a lift – because they have no Police cars! It is Sean who was telling me how many blacks die in Zambia on a farm of a friend of his. At his job, here in Johannesburg, Sean was telling me about how many blacks die in his company from AIDS. He remarked cynically, that at work, every so often, at a meeting they will be told “So-and-so is very ill and he is going back to the homelands to consult a traditional healer”. Sean then said that “whenever the white man’s medicine no longer works, you must know the black man is busy dying from AIDS.” When it gets to the point where he needs to see a Sangoma (Witch Doctor), you must know the end is near for him.
