Dear Jan Prior to my departure from my beloved South Africa, a really good place to observe the collapse and decline in government service was at our local office of Home Affairs in Bloemfontein. The filth, stench and chaos in the office are something to behold. Probably a good pay-back for us previously-advantaged whites having our own facilities whilst our now-advantaged and previously-disadvantaged downtrodden brothers had to go to their department of Bantu Affairs. Proudly displayed in that office is a hand-written notice stating their aim to Provide a World-Class Service”. Whilst all of this can be taken as a joke, I see Home Affairs ran out of passports a few weeks ago. The first time in history. [This country is going downhill faster and faster. Its not surprising. I’m a firm believer that EVEN WORSE… will yet follow. I’ve always enjoyed watching the ANC I must say, with their BIG MOUTHS… about how they will do this and do that… despite the fact that all of Africa to the north of us has been imploding into new levels of hell. I always used to watch the ANC cynically, thinking how easy it is to TALK. Talk is cheap. Empty vessels make most noise. Now look at them. As Cliff Saunders remarked to me the one day: “I can’t wait for the 2010 World Cup soccer…” Cliff went on to remark that he can’t wait for us to hear all the stories of corruption and theft which will come out of that!
