I don’t think there is a person left in this country, of virtually any race, who has any faith that these people can protect us and ensure that justice is done. Jan] Police were still in the dark on Tuesday about the culprits behind the weekend theft of foreign currency at the Johannesburg International airport. “There are absolutely no developments,” spokesperson Senior Superintendent Vish Naidoo said on Tuesday morning. He said investigators were not following any strong leads at this point. There was also no new information on a theory that the crime could have been an inside job. On Saturday, two men armed with AK-47 assault rifles approached an SAA aircraft, held up guards and police and helped themselves to bags of currency that had been flown in from the United Kingdom. Others members of the gang was held up guards at one of the gates. All of the men fled, no shots were fired and no one was injured. Police were still unable to say how much was stolen. But recent newspaper reports indicated the amount came to millions of dollars. The SA Chamber of Business on Monday appealed to the Airports Company SA (Acsa), SA Airways and the police to ensure that the chances of another airport robbery were minimised. “We believe that airport security should feature high on the order of priorities for SAA, ACSA and the SAPS. We trust that this consideration will be the foremost subject of the meetings that are to take place between these three agencies,” executive president Deidre Penfold said. Acsa said on Monday details of how the robbery occurred were unknown. “Details around how the incident occurred, how much was stolen and who did it are under police investigation,” said Acsa spokesperson Solomon Makgale. Airport general manager Chris Hlekane said: “In the interim, we have sensitised our security stakeholders and have placed them on high alert”.
