S.Africa: 900(43)+ Houses destroyed by flooding
[We have had the wettest summer I have ever experienced in Johannesburg. There has been well above average rain across S.Africa. Jan] More than 900 houses in villages in the Taung district of North West have been destroyed by flooding, the SABC reported on Tuesday. A disaster management team that visited the area was considering evacuating most of the residents. Taung mayor Boitumelo Mahlangu said shelter and health issues were priorities. Tents were to be erected at the Taung sports stadium to accommodate homeless families, and food parcels would be flown to the villages by air force helicopters, the SABC reported. Earlier, the North West health department said there were no diarrhoea or malaria outbreaks in villages in Taung. “Currently our multi-outbreak response team is working on the ground with the municipality, and water samples taken for laboratory tests all produced negative results. “We can confirm that in the affected communities, the majority of people are drinking water from boreholes and water from Sedibeng water authorities, which in essence limits the chances of possible water contamination, which in many case is the cause of diarrhoea,” spokesperson Barba Gaoganediwe said. Mayor Mahlangu had said earlier that diarrhoea had broken out in six villages because of the heavy rains. – Sapa Source: Independent Online (IOL) |
