Jan] SAFETY IN SOUTH AFRICA The increasing amount of farm attacks that have occured recently, could be seen as acts of terrorism, Mr Paul van der Walt, President of TAU SA said. Isn™t there a similarity between a bomb attack in London, or the previous bomb in Church Street, and the senseless killing of a farmer and his family? The effect of such a deed does not differ much in a macro environment compared to the minor number of individuals involved in the farming community. The reality is that in the agricultural field, the total economy of a farm is at risk with catastrophic results for all, including the labourers. In most cases defenceless senior citizens are being attacked, whilst they are attempting to feed the South African community. Government did not hesitate to condemn the bomb attacks in London, but are reluctant to give an opinion about the crime rate and more specifically the farm attacks in South Africa. The first and foremost responsibility of any government should be the safety of its own people. Residents, both black and white, have noticed that the government has failed in this regard. Mr Van der Walt was of the opinion that politicians should spend less time abroad and more time trying to solve problems in South Africa, especially the safety aspect.
