[Another case of divine intervention and justice by accident. This is the only justice we have left in this country. Jan] One robber escaped and another drowned after a shoot-out with police on the Golden Highway in Lenasia, southern Johannesburg, after a hijacking on Monday morning. The man apparently drowned after running away and jumping into a spruit [river], said police spokesperson Captain Mbazima Shiburi. He said the incident unfolded when a mechanic and a van driver were repairing their van at the side of the road in Zakariyya Park, near Lenasia, when they were approached by two armed men. “The men demanded the keys, before fleeing in the van.” Shiburi said the men flagged down a police officer driving in the area minutes later, and reported the incident. “A chase and shoot-out ensued along the Golden Highway. The two suspects stopped the vehicle ahead of a ditch and fled on foot in different directions. One suspect jumped into a nearby spruit and disappeared.” The second man fled. Shiburi said a police diver who was summoned to the scene retrieved the man’s body. “Police believe the man drowned. There are no injuries or bullet wounds on his body. A post mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.” A case of hijacking and an inquest docket would be investigated.
