Mugabe"s Revenge: Man who quit faces losing farm
[The farms were Mugabe”s rewards to his political friends and allies. I am glad to see this man making a stand. Jan] A top Zanu PF official who has quit Zimbabwe”s ruling party to protest against demolitions that have left hundreds of thousands homeless, has begun experiencing the bitter taste of President Robert Mugabe”s revenge tactics. Pearson Mbalekwa, who served as a senior director in the dreaded Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) before he left the organisation to assume a senior position in the ruling party, handed his resignation to party chairman John Nkomo last Friday. But only yesterday officials from the ministry of lands raided a farm Mbalekwa had been allocated in Zimbabwe”s central city of Gweru under a controversial land reform programme and seized a tractor and an assortment of heavy agricultural machinery he had been given by the government for use on his farm. It is understood Mbalekwa will soon be served with a notice to vacate the farm completely. A government official who requested not to be named said a dispatch to act on Mbalekwa had come from Mugabe”s aides attending a meeting with the Zimbabwean leader in Libya. The aides only issue instructions approved by their leader. Mbalekwa confirmed the seizure of the equipment he had been allocated yesterday but said he stood by his decision to quit the ruling party despite the retribution. “They are now on a mission to punish and destroy me,” said Mbalekwa. He repeated his stance that the slums and informal settlements being destroyed were a direct product of the Mugabe government”s policies. He did not see sense in destroying people”s homes before building them alternative shelter. The demolitions, which have left between 300 000 and a million people homeless, have sparked international outrage but Mugabe has defended them, saying they were necessary to clean dirty cities and towns. Prominent South African human rights lawyer George Bizos has joined the chorus of condemnations. Speaking at the launch of a biography of MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai in Johannesburg, Bizos said the demolition campaign was clear testimony that the rule of law was seriously compromised in Zimbabwe.
