S.Africa: Naked couple stranded after roadside robbery

A man and his wife were left naked and stranded after three armed robbers ordered them to strip and robbed them of their car and cellphones outside Witbank on Tuesday, police said. Police spokesperson Captain Abie Khoabane said the two were sitting in their Volkswagen Polo Player in the Kwagcuca township when three men held them at gunpoint and ordered them to get into the back seat and lie down. The robbers drove off with the couple and stopped on a gravel road in the Delmas area, where they were ordered to undress. Khoabane said the robbers then took the couple”s cellphones and drove off in their car. The naked pair were rescued by a man who was on his way to work at a nearby garage. He took them to their relatives, who gave them clothes and took them to police to report the incident. Khoabane said police were trying to link this incident to a similar one where a man and his girlfriend were hijacked in Witbank two weeks ago. They were sitting next to the N12 highway in their red Isuzu when the robbers approached them and were dropped off in a similar environment in Delmas, but were not forced to undress. Police suspect the perpetrators walked from place to place as the victims did not see a car in either incident and the robbers “appeared from nowhere”. Khoabane said they targeted people who were relaxing. The environment in which the robberies took place suggested they might be from Witbank or Nigel. – Sapa Source: Independent Online (IOL) |
