S.Africa: 2005: Shocking Job Loss Fact Sheet
[Here are some quick facts that will show you the shocking state of this country”s industry. These facts come from the ANC-affiliated Trade Unions. Jan] o Official Govt statistics say unemployment in S.Africa is now at a shocking 40%. Unofficial unemployment stats say the true rate is much higher. o In 2005, about 216 000 workers in the steel, automobile and motor industries went on a Cosatu protest against job losses (how ridiculous!) According to COSATU (one of the ANC”s allies):- o In steel and engineering employment has slipped by over 30% from 460,000 in 1985 to 310 000 in 2005 o According to the Fridge study, conducted among steel and engineering companies, 13 000 workers had lost their jobs. o This year alone 5l 000 workers lost their jobs. o In February 2001, they registered 37% amounting to 6,9-million unemployed people in the country o According to official statistics the current rate of unemployment in the country is 40%. o Labour Research Services further pointed out that of the 43-million South Africans, 10,8-million were living in poverty and this figure is steadily on the rise as more workers are set to lose their jobs.
