But we should be shooting back a lot more… Jan] A Pietermaritzburg man, Farouk Alli, chased a gang of hijackers and shot at them – all the way down a street in upmarket Prestbury – and recovered his Hi-Ace vehicle on Wednesday. Police spokesperson Joshua Gwala said the hijacking took place after Alli, 34, had alighted from his Hi-Ace and opened the gate at his home. As he walked back to his vehicle, he noticed a white Mazda 323, occupied by four men, parked on the road. “Two armed men alighted and confronted him. The other two men remained in the vehicle. The gunmen then demanded his vehicle keys. “Thereafter they got into his vehicle and sped away, followed by the Mazda 323,” said Gwala. Alli chased and fired at the hijackers. Fortunately for Alli, the hijacked vehicle stalled not far from the scene, forcing the two gunmen to abandon it. The hijackers jumped into the getaway vehicle, which had a Gauteng registration number, and fled the scene. News of the hijacking as well as a description of the getaway vehicle were then circulated via the Police Emergency Services communication system. Not long afterwards, the vehicle was spotted by police and stopped in Unicorn Road, in the Westgate area. Three suspects, aged between 18 and 25, were arrested and charged with hijacking. Gwala said all three men were expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg magistrate’s court soon. He said police were investigating the possibility that the three men may be linked to other hijacking cases in the Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas.
