Bread shortage looms as Zim runs out of cash for wheat
[The economy is very shaky… Good… these are the results of Socialism. I like! Jan] Food crisis-hit Zimbabwe could soon face bread shortages, as wheat imports are running out due to foreign exchange problems, a state-owned newspaper has said. “The country could face bread shortages as flour supplies continue to dwindle,” the Sunday Mail said. “National Bakers’ Association chairman and Lobels Bakers chief executive Mr Burombo Mudumo said the supply situation was presently below normal for big bakeries, which were now using strategic reserves.” The parastatal National Foods, which imports the bulk of Zimbabwe’s wheat, said it had been unable to win foreign exchange under a government auction system due to a cash shortage, and could not pay suppliers. An estimated 4 million Zimbabweans faced starvation by next year unless they got help, UN World Food Programme chief James Morris said last week. From The Cape Argus (SA), 6 June |
