[This is very interesting. Even Liberals are now concerned over how the ANC is rewriting the past. Already, everyone is concerned about the renaming of Pretoria to Tshwane.

The Afrikaners are fervently opposed to it because the hub of Afrikanerdom and Afrikaner history revolves around Pretoria. They question the “Tshwane” idea. Other Blacks say that “Tshwane” was not the last Black chief there…

I note with interest, as the Afrikaners are getting ready to fight the Tshwane issue even up in the constitutional court – that on TV news in the evenings, they are using the name “Tshwane” all the time, and they never use the name Pretoria anymore – so I think the debate over the name Pretoria is already largely academic… and the Afrikaners haven’t got a hope in hell of achieving anything.

Even the Liberals are noticing that the ANC’s real aims are to create a fake version of history which will only deepen the rift between Black and White.

Does any of this surprise me? Not in the least. I said all along that the ANC are a bunch of liars, who like in the novel, 1984, they will rewrite history and pretend the past was completely different to what it really was. As it is, they have lied about Apartheid and Whites for decades. Now they are just inventing history and sucking it out of their thumbs – AS IT SUITS THEM POLITICALLY! Even Blacks have said that Tshwane was not the last chief in that area – the last chief was probably a descendant of the Zulus – but that does not fit into the ANC’s scheme of things… ergo… they invent what the heck they want.

In my view the ANC are liars who like to twist history so that they can get the maximum political points out of it. But I have not doubt we will see more ANC lies in the years to come as they continue to rewrite history in their own image. Jan]

Cape Town – Some of South Africa’s efforts as it wrestles with its history and looks for ways to memorialise the past are misdirected, says Democratic Alliance leader Tony Leon.

He has called for more open and wide-ranging debate on the country’s past.

In his weekly newsletter on the DA’s SA Today website, he gave as one example of misdirected effort attempts to change the name of Pretoria to Tshwane.

“The efforts… do not represent a memorialisation of South Africa’s history, but rather a kind of bland fantasy that obscures history,” he said.

There were similar, costly efforts at re-naming throughout the country.

“Yet we have not even properly acknowledged the victims of the apartheid regime yet, nor have we fully learned the lessons of the abuses of the past – lessons that are more and more relevant today.”

Need debate

Referring to the official opening of the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in the German capital Berlin earlier this week, he said even in the guilty shadow of the Holocaust, Germans had felt free to complain and argue over the design of the memorial, or whether it was needed at all.

“Such dissent was the very antithesis of fascism, and a reminder of how far Germany has really come.”

What South Africa was missing, most of all, “is the kind of open, wide-ranging debate about our history that greeted Berlin’s memorial”.

“We should therefore embolden our debate and not allow it to be stifled by accusations of racism, self-imposed silences, and the crippling doctrine of political correctness.

“We should learn from Germany’s example. When we debate our past, the character of that debate should not mimic the odious system of repression from which our country has emerged,” Leon said.
