Johannesburg – Gauteng schools will have to change their admission forms since, in future, they will be required to indicate a pupil’s race.

This follows a circular to schools setting out the protocol for race profiles of institutions resorting under the Gauteng education department.

Several principals expressed their surprise. One remarked, “After 11 years of democracy, this kind of information ought to be redundant – especially in view of endeavours to create a non-racist, non-sexist society”.

A letter carrying the signature of MaLlel Petje, executive chief, states the department needs this type of information for strategic planning purposes, the main purpose being to gauge the level of transformation and affirmative measures in schools.
