[The Freedom Front Plus represents Afrikaners who want their own country. Jan] Pretoria – The Freedom Front Plus has joined a number of political parties and civic groups in objecting to the registration of the name, Tshwane, to replace Pretoria. FF Plus member of parliament Willie Spies said on Monday: “The Tshwane metro council has made every legal mistake in the book so far in its drive to remove the name Pretoria from the map.” The council voted in March to retain the name Pretoria for the city centre and to use the name Tshwane for the greater metropolitan area. The political party said the “tug-of-war” about the name, Pretoria, was not in the best interests of the community and suggested an open discussion, which might lead to a mutually acceptable settlement on the issue. FF Plus to submit its objections Spies said: “We still believe it is possible and requested the metro council to allow a deputation of Pretoria people to address the council. “The request has been denied.” The FF Plus said it planned to submit its objections about the name registration to the metro council and the SA Geographical Names Council (SAGNC), which was responsible for processing the registration before recommending it to Arts and Culture Minister Pallo Jordan. The party said it had sent its request for a discussion on the matter to Jordan and still awaited a response. ‘Offensive names will be sent to minister’ SAGNC chairman Tommy Ntsewa said the recommendation to register a place name would be sent to the arts and culture minister only if the name was not found to be offensive or a duplication of another South African place name. Registration of the name would mean it would appear on maps, in weather reports and on all official documentation. Ntsewa said the Tshwane metro had followed correct and legal procedure in applying to register the name Tshwane with the SAGNC – contrary to a claim last week by the Democratic Alliance.
