Rome, Italy, Apr. 13 (UPI) — The Food and Agriculture Organization warned Wednesday 23 countries in Africa will need food aid this year.

In its Africa report, the Rome-based agency said the situation in Sudan was particularly alarming, given the continued conflict and resulting population displacement as well as drought.

But the FAO said the HIV/AIDS epidemic that continues to plague the continent is leading to food insecurity, as well, most notably in Zimbabwe.

The other nations likely to require food aid this year are: Angola, Burundi, Chad, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Guinea, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritania, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, and Uganda.
