S.Africa: Coloured man shoots 2 Whites dead over Racial remarks

Two men were shot dead in an apparently racially motivated shooting just before midnight on Friday. Police Inspector Stephen Marais said two white brothers-in-law in their early 30s had gone to the Oceanic Hotel in West Bank. There “they made racial remarks to the coloureds” and an argument had broken out. The two white men then returned home to High Street in West Bank, apparently followed by a coloured patron of the hotel. Marais said shots were exchanged, first in the yard of the men’s house and then in the street. One man died in the street, and the other in an ambulance on the way to hospital. Neighbours called the police, who arrested a man two blocks from the scene and confiscated a 9mm pistol. Police remained on the scene from midnight on Friday until 7am on Saturday. Marais said police were treating the matter as a racial incident. He declined to release the names of the dead men or the suspect.
