A man who calls himself Thulani, cell phone number 072 191 3182 / 072 058 4014 (he called from both numbers) approached me telephonically about 2 or 3 weeks ago with regards to printing. He explained that he is a black man who has white business partners. He further explained that the white partners cannot apply for government tenders as the government only considers black empowerment companies, so what he does, is apply on their behalf and they split the profit. He then said that they have all the deals, but they don’t have a designer/printer to do all the layouts and printing of the brochures, business cards etc. and asked if I would be interested, as my payment will be upfront. I didn’t give it much thought as I was busy with a huge order for Nedbank at the time and was working till the early morning hours every day to have the Nedbank order delivered in time.

On the 22nd of March Thulani phoned me again and asked if we could set up a meeting with him and his partner(s). I declined, as I didn’t have any transport as my vehicle was in for major repairs. The morning of the 23rd of March Thulani called and I’ve agreed to meet at Mimmo’s at Westgate shopping centre, as I was using my husband’s vehicle for the day. We met at around 11 o’ clock. Another male who claimed to be Thulani’s brother and called himself Themba accompanied Thulani. They explained the government tenders to me again. That same evening I received a telephonic call from “Andre Kruger”, cell phone number 072 585 2523, who said he’s only calling me to say that Thulani informed him about me and that I shouldn’t worry, that all the deals are legal.

I received more calls from Thulani the next day (24th of March) to ask if I could maybe meet his partner(s). I informed him that I still did not get my vehicle back from the garage and that I would contact him as soon as I have transport. He accepted but said I should try and make it as soon as possible, as some of the printing is really urgent, one of which is for a University.

On Tuesday, 29th March I received yet another call from a man who calls himself Andre Rodgers, cell phone number

083 237 5485. Thulani yet again referred him. We arranged to meet at Cresta Centre as his “practise” is located there.

On Wednesday, 30th March I drove to cresta centre and had coffee at the wimpy. While I was at the Wimpy, Andre called to say that he couldn’t make it as auditors are holding him up at his office in Bramley, but Thulani will direct me to him. Thulani, a black man, about 1.85m, short hair with no facial hair, round face, stout (about 110kg), dressed in maroon velvet pants, a maroon t-shirt and black leather jacket, waited for me outside the Wimpy and has taken two files with business cards from all my previous clients from my profile and said he would return it to me the same day, as he wants to show it to his other partners. I then drove as per Thulani’s directions to Bramley Gardens shopping centre. On my arrival I phoned Andre to tell him that I’ve arrived in order to get an office number. He said that the auditors are still there and his place is a mess, so he would rather meet me at my car. He (white male, short dark hair, about 1.9m and 120kg, black mustache, fair complexion and clean shaven, dressed in a white shirt and black woolen jacket) got into my car, while another white man was standing near the offices. They were both dressed in black woolen jackets (melton jackets). The man who got into my car with me, asked me to prepare a quote on full colour flyers as well as business cards. He instructed me to call him as soon as I have the quote ready for him, as he will then give me a fax number or email address to where I could send the quote. I came back to Roodepoort and saw another client. I then fetched my children and their cousins from my sister-in-law as we arranged for a sleep over for the children. I came home with the children, made lunch, had coffee and then called Andre, who said he is with other business partners in Lower Houghton, but the quote is very urgent and asked if I could deliver it to him in Lower Houghton. He directed me to a bottle store, called Houghton Bottle Store.

I left directly afterwards. While on my way to Houghton I phoned my son, in whose name the business cheque account is to inform him that I will be withdrawing money from the account as I noticed that it’s quite late and I might not make it to the bank after I’ve been to Houghton and I need to pay for the repair of my car. I went to the Nedbank branch in Florida, and withdrew R5000.00 from the teller and then I headed for Houghton. I received several more calls from Thulani, saying that Andre was waiting and I shouldn’t keep him waiting, as they were business people. The directions given to me, taking me to:

When I got to the address in Lower Houghton, Tulani was waiting in the parking area He then got into my car, said that Andre and his partners are at the bottle store, buying a drink. My filofax with my money (R5000 plus about R1800 I received from clients the previous day) was between the front seats. He took my filofax, removed the money and said, “You may go home now Ma’am, This was a scam”, got out of my car and walked away. I got out of my car and tried to see where he was headed. I panicked and called Thulani from my cellphone, (which was lying on my lap at the time of the crime), and he just laughed and said “It’s not your or my money anymore because I work for the white men, by the way, you are all the same” I ran into the bottle store/pub and all the time I was trying to call Andre, but he would just not answer his phone or push the reject button.

There is no way they could have known about my visit to the bank.
