Corruption: Nigeria: N55 million Bribery Scandal
The Minister of Education, Professor Fabian Osuji, has been dismissed from office as a result of his involvement in the N55 million bribery scandal involving his ministry. President Olusegun Obasanjo who announced this yesterday evening in a broadcast to the nation, also disclosed that the former minister will be handed over to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), for prosecution. Professor Osuji was released last Sunday by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), after three days in detention on allegations that he offered the sum of N55 million to senators and members of the House of Representatives. The minister while under interrogation, disclosed to EFCC officials that the senate president had demanded the sum of N55 million to facilitate the passage of the education ministry budget but that N26 million was given to Wabara out of which he allegedly cornered N20 million. President Obasanjo also disclosed that the permanent secretary of the ministry of education, Mr. P.S. Abdu, who was also indicted in the bribery scandal and five other directors of the ministry, will be referred to the Federal Civil Service Commission for appropriate disciplinary action. The president revealed that besides the education ministry, intelligence report he has received showed that some other ministries have paid bribes to lawmakers. He added that such action by the ministers was in violation of and contrary to the in structions he had given the ministers and departments and parastatals under them not to give such bribes. Beside the minister and officials of the education ministry who were sanctioned, the president also announced that the vice chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Professor Jude E. Njoku, who provided N25 million as part of the bribe has been recommended for appropriate disciplinary action by the education ministry. The vice chancellor, the president added, will be handed over to the ICPC for further action. The president also indicted the executive secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Peter Okebukola for providing a loan of N20 million to the education ministry, saying that the executive secretary will be dealt with appropriately. It will be recalled that Professor Fabian Osuji succeeded Professor Babalola Aborishade as education minister after the 2003 elections. Source: AllAfrica.Com |
