S.Africa: Gang leader dies in shootout
White River – An alleged gang leader was shot dead and three apparent accomplices were arrested, said Mpumalanga police on Friday. Captain Benjamin Bhembe said police received information on Thursday about the whereabouts of the four men, who were driving from Kanyamazane township to Kabokweni, near White River. Police spotted the four men around midnight, driving to a filling station in Kanyamazane. The alleged gang leader saw the police and stopped at the filling station. Bhembe said all four got out of the vehicle, the “leader” pulled out a firearm and started shooting at the police. ’26 bullets found in man’s body’ In the shoot-out, the “gang leader” was hit in the head, chest and left arm. The other three men surrendered and were arrested. The wounded man was taken to a hospital where he died of his wounds on Friday morning. Bhembe said nursing staff found 26 bullets in his body. The police confiscated a 9mm pistol with 15 rounds of ammunition, several other unlicensed firearms and six cellphones, which were believed to have been stolen. The men who were arrested also had 16 rounds of ammunition with them. Bhembe said police had been looking for the men for crimes ranging from murder, rape and assault to possession of unlicensed firearms. They were due to appear in court soon.
