The man accused of raping and beating three-year-old Jamy-Lee Julies to death allegedly told people that the fatally-injured little girl was “faint” only a few hours before she died.

And 25-year-old Abdul Mohamed asked neighbours to help him look after Jamy-Lee, who was found lying under a blanket in her mother’s Valhalla Park home and rushed to the Valhalla Community Health Centre on September 14, 2003.

The little girl was already dead when she arrived at the hospital, having sustained injuries to her head, chest and face.

Her vagina had been torn apart and her body was covered in bruises.

The brutal killing sent shock waves through the Valhalla Park community, who attended Jamy-Lee’s funeral in large numbers.

Mohamed, an assistant truck driver who had been dating Jamy-Lee’s mother, Jessica for a few months before her murder, is expected to appear in the Cape High Court this morning. On Monday Judge Roger Cleaver postponed Mohamed’s trial until today.

Mohamed was not asked to plead during his last court appearance. He is being represented by advocate Sheriff Mahomed. The State, represented by advocate Mornay Julius, alleges that Jessica Julius left Jamy-Lee in Mohamed’s care on the Sunday afternoon that the little girl was killed.

During Mohamed’s bail application in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court in October 2003, it was revealed that his photograph had been posted in Valhalla Park shebeens in the area and that certain members of the community were intent on killing him.

The bail application was initially scheduled to take place at the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court but was moved after a near-riot broke out among angry residents.
